As the year wraps up and people are traveling to either celebrate or return home, some airports are experiencing certain conditions and events that are complicating matters. KCTV 5 has reported that a potential security threat at Kansas City International Airport led to a law enforcement investigation on December 31, 2025. Officers investigated for over an hour before confirming that there was no threat.
Later the same day, Clevehand Hopkins International Airport issued a ground stop for roughly 45 minutes, again due to a suspected security threat. Flights were not allowed to depart, and inbound flights could not leave their origin airports while law enforcement inspected the airport to determine the validity of the threat. Once again, officers found that there was no threat, and operations resumed normally.
Security Threats At Kansas City And Cleveland
On December 31, 2025, suspicious emails were sent to FAA offices warning of security dangers at US airports, including bomb threats. There were several threats sent regarding multiple US airports, with the largest and most prominent of the affected airports being Kansas City International Airport and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. In both cases, officials needed to inspect the airport terminal to determine the validity of the threat.
Kansas City International Airport began investigating shortly before noon on December 31, evacuating individuals from the area in question while calling in airport police and the FBI. The investigation lasted for slightly over an hour, and flights experienced moderate delays. However, law enforcement determined that no bomb was present, nor was there any other security threat in the airport, and operations resumed normally.
Shortly after the investigation concluded at Kansas City, the FAA issued a ground stop for Cleveland Hopkins International Airport at 1:30 PM. Local police and airport security were called to investigate the airport due to a similar threat, which was later determined to be false. The ground stop was lifted less than 45 minutes later, but despite this, many afternoon flights experienced heavy delays.
More Details On False Security Threats
Kansas City and Cleveland were not the only airports to receive security threats on New Year’s Eve (rather, they were the largest airports to be impacted). Threats like those that were sent to the FAA have obvious implications for passenger safety, and so airports are diligent in investigating the validity of the threats. Typically, these threats (which are often bomb threats) are unfounded.
The areas specified in the threats have to be evacuated so that authorities can inspect for any possible threat to public safety. This can increase congestion inside airport terminals and can also increase dwell times. Furthermore, depending on where the threat is located, this can affect aircraft operations, depending on whether gate areas are affected.
In some cases, such as the investigation at Cleveland, the airport may need to temporarily halt operations. This can lead to significant delays for extended periods of time. Not only does this impact flights departing or arriving at the airport, but this can also impact other flights in an airline’s network, since aircraft and crews are no longer where they’re intended to be. This is especially true if an affected airport is a large station for an airline.

Looking back on the most interesting, important, and impactful diversions of the year.
Recent Challenges During Holiday Travel
The holidays at the end of the year are some of the busiest times of travel, yet this period also comes with some unique challenges. Most critically, adverse weather conditions such as snow and ice pose a significant threat to aircraft safety. In events such as snow storms, airlines often have to delay ot cancel flights since the operating environment is otherwise unsafe, and this exact set of circumstances recently hit the New York metropolitan area, while another, more recent snow storm impacted the US Midwest.
These operational challenges are further complicated by the high passenger demand, which puts greater strain on airline operations. As you can see, carriers are under heavy pressure already, and the new security threats are now an even greater headache operationally. Although no legitimate threat has been discovered, the resulting disruption at the airport from the inspection and investigation has a substantial impact.
